About Shoal Bay

Shoal Bay is Darwins premier barra and mud crab fishing water. The bay runs from lee Point in the south to Gunn Point to the north.
There are numerous creeks and two rivers that drain into the bay, the rivers being the Howard & little Howard rivers. The floodplains at the top of these rivers provide the perfect breeding environment for barra and this is why the bay continually produces quality fish. The main areas fished are the two rivers, Hope Inlet, King Creek, Meckit Creek and Buffallo Crteek but the many creeks along Gunn Point can provide some great fishing for mangrove jacks on the high tide. At low tide the bay completely dries out, this is the time to lock yourself in a hole for the day and target barra, and at high tide up on the flood plains is the place to be.

Tour details

All tours are tide dependant and it may not always be possible to conduct the tour you want on the day you want. We recommend you talk to Bob and work out the best tours to suit your avaliable dates or if you have the vesatility let Bob choose a day to conduct the tour you would like to do. All tour times are also tide dependant.
We supply all tackle, crab pots and equiptment and we have ice, bottled water and cooldrinks on board. You will need to supply your own food, alcohol and sun protection. It is also advisable to bring an ice box to take your catch home in.
At the end of the trip we are happy to fillet your fish and cook your mud crabs for you.

High tide tours

High tide barra tours are conducted three hours either side of the high tide. This is the shorter of the barra tours but can still produce some remarkable results. Generally when fishing the high tide we fish at the top of the rivers and the bigger the tide the further up we fish. Crab pots can be set on the way out to add to the catch at the end of the trip.

low tide tours

low tide barra tours are conducted over the outgoing tide and last for eight to nine hours. We generaly leave just after the high tide and fish until the tide turns to come back in. This fishing involves locking  into one hole in the bay for the day and you are not able to move or return until the tide turns. Although the outgoing tide is not ideal for crabbing we can still put out some pots and get a feed.

mud crab tours

Mud crab tours are conducted over the incoming tide and last for about four hours. Crabs can be cooked for you at the end of the trip
